Shri Som Parkash, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has highlighted the ‘One-District One-Product’ (ODOP) initiative as a key driver of balanced regional growth. With a focus on selecting, branding, and promoting at least one product from each district of the country, the initiative aims to foster comprehensive socioeconomic progress across all regions. In order to boost the sales and exports of all ODOP products, a range of strategies has been implemented. These include capacity-building schemes in partnership with both government and private institutions like National Institutes of Design and National Institutes of Fashion Technology, as well as drives to onboard ODOP Bazaar onto e-commerce platforms such as Government e-Market (GeM). Additionally, virtual buyer-seller meetings have been organized in collaboration with Indian embassies and missions abroad to introduce the ODOP initiative to international audiences. The goal is to showcase the vast array of ODOP products and raise awareness of their diversity, thereby enhancing the brand’s image and facilitating international marketing of local products.

  • Through tireless efforts by the Embassy of India in Tokyo and the Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Indian mangoes have been successfully promoted in Japan through two editions of the ‘Mango Festival of India in Tokyo, Japan.’
  • The most recent achievement of this endeavor is the recent launch of Indian Mangoes in 127 convenient Lawson stores (as of March 29th, 2022) and in the wholesale markets of Nishikasai and Akita Prefecture (as of March 28th, 2022). These aromatic and nutritious fruits are sure to tantalize the taste buds of Japanese consumers.
  • In Guwahati, the Ministry of Development of North-East Region (DoNER) teamed up with the North-East Mega Buyer Seller Meet. This event witnessed over 70 traders, sellers, farmers, and aggregators from all over the Northeastern states who exhibited their unique products to the attendees.
  • On September 26, 2021, an initiative in collaboration with JKTPO successfully replaced imports by importing more than 2000 KGs of premium walnuts from Budgam, Jammu & Kashmir to Bangalore, Karnataka.
  • On September 22, 2021, the Embassy of India, Moscow collaborated with Sui Dhaaga to host a buyer-seller meet for textile products, emphasizing rayon and polyester originating from India and Russia.

The International Day of Yoga (IDY) was celebrated on June 21, 2022, at Times Square in New York in collaboration with the Consulate General of India, New York, and ODOP was there to support and showcase the event. Additionally, at the World Economic Forum held in the Indian Pavilion in Davos, Switzerland, from Jan 22-26, 2023, a variety of ODOP products were displayed.

In its drive to encourage exports and public procurement of ODOP products, the initiative has established active partnerships with several Indian Embassies. Diverse ODOP products have already been dispatched to Indian Embassies situated in countries such as Argentina, Nigeria, and Croatia, among others.

To drive exports of ODOP products, exhibitions showcasing them have been held at the Zagreb Ethnographic Museum in Croatia and in Vancouver, Canada.

The ODOP initiative facilitates product selection by States/UTs, with existing eco-systems factored in alongside Export Hubs (DEH) and GI-tagged products identified under Districts. DPIIT receives the comprehensive rundown of items from relevant State/UT departments. Activities such as capacity building and exhibitions occur at the district and State/UT levels, with coordination and consultation with the relevant departments.

To promote balanced regional development across all districts of the nation, the ODOP Initiative has been implementing various measures. States and Union Territories have actively participated in facilitating trade at domestic and international events, including the Dubai World Expo 2020 and the International Day of Yoga in New York in June 2022. The Initiative has also been conducting workshops focused on capacity building in areas such as organic certification and design development, benefiting local artisans, weavers, manufacturers, and others. For example, workshops have been organized for artisans and weavers in Khambhat, Gujarat, to produce Agate stone products, Ladakh for Sea buckthorn and Apricot productsTripura for Bamboo furniture and handicrafts, Rajasthan for Molela Clay-Work, and Assam for Kamrup Silk products.

The ODOP Initiative encompasses the following activities:

  • Over 70 vendors, traders, cultivators, and aggregators from diverse districts within the Northeast regions assembled to showcase their products in the Mega Buyer-Seller Meet hosted in Jammu and Kashmir and Assam. An array of national and international brands were in attendance in the Jammu & Kashmir trade event.
  • In association with the Embassy of India, Tokyo, Japan, the Mango Festival of India in Japan showcased an array of mango varieties from Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Telangana. The festival successfully launched Indian Mangoes from 8 states (46 districts) and made them available at 127 Lawson convenience stores (from 29th March 2022), as well as in the wholesale markets of Nishikasai and Akita Prefecture (from 28th March 2022). These mouth-watering and nutritious mangoes are sure to delight Japanese consumers.
  • Numerous ODOP items made an appearance at the World Economic Forum, hosted at Davos in Switzerland’s Indian Pavilion from January 22nd to January 26th, 2023.
