Liz Truss becomes British Prime Minister after Boris Johnson resigns

The United Kingdom's Conservative Party has selected Liz Truss as its new leader,

and Queen Elizabeth II will formally name Truss as prime minister on Tuesday.

Truss was elected as the U.K.'s next prime minister and paid tribute to her "friend" Boris Johnson.

Truss has promised action on the energy crisis within a week of taking office,

but has not spelled out her plans in any detail. She will also have to unite a divided Conservative Party.

In an op-ed published by The Sunday Telegraph, Sir Keir Starmer said that the appointment of a fourth Conservative prime minister did not mark a "new dawn" for Britain.

Johnson announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party in July, and will be succeeded by Truss.

The ceremony to install Truss as prime minister will take place at the queen's Balmoral estate in Scotland.

Truss replaces Boris Johnson, who was forced to resign after losing support of many of his own ministers.

She secured more than 81,000 votes, the lowest proportion of any leader in recent history.

As new leader, Truss will likely make a statement outside 10 Downing Street later Tuesday, and will aim to "act immediately" to combat the energy crisis.

Even though Sunak has promised to support a new government even if he is not leader, political analysts say it will be difficult for Truss to unify her divided Conservatives.

Truss signalled during her leadership campaign that she would challenge convention by scrapping tax increases and cutting other levies,

Which has prompted some investors to dump the pound and government bonds.
